Social Media 101: What Parents Need to Know

In Partnership with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and the Cheltenham Police Department is pleased to announce an important Presentation for Parents

Presenter– Anthony Luker from the PA Attorney General’s Office

This program provides a foundational education on to the dangers of the online community from the Police Athletic League (PAL)

This discussion includes the following:

  • Current social media trends across all student demographics (age)
  • Popular social media, messaging, anonymous and teen dating apps: (Snapchat, Instagram, Spotafriend, Whisper, etc.) & some of the variables—dangers that can be presented
  • Internet crimes (PA Crimes Code) cyber-bullying, sexting, harassment, identity theft
  • The dangers of gaming and un-moderated chat rooms
  • Vault/ghost apps - what these apps can be used to hide, how to identify these apps and what these apps enable you to do that will not show on the cell phone bill
  • Real life child predator cases and the techniques predators use to groom potential victims
  • The importance of building a positive social media profile (digital footprint)
  • Empowering parents & educators
  • Properly securing your child's tech devices (parental controls, content filters, etc.)
  • Digital permanence - what goes online remains online; and background checks and the effects of one's digital footprint on private school & college admission, in addition to potential employment.
